"The Dead Winemakers Society is our homage to those visionary individuals that carved their path in the wine industry before us. They were the crazy ones, the wild-eyed wine poets that had a deep respect for both the land they farmed and the process of guiding the fruit to bottle in the most thoughtful and composed manner possible. Although there have been many who have inspired us through their wines and philosophy, this wine is dedicated to Bartolo Mascarello, a towering figure in Piedmont. Mascarello’s traditional approach to winemaking and outspoken views elevated him to cult status – his mantra of “No Barrique, No Berlusconi” echoing through the valleys of the region. So this is for you Bartolo... And of course, you, the wine drinker. We’d like to think we’ve done you both proud."
Cherry red in colour, it smells of rich earth and lavish floral perfume. The taste is a magic combination of bright cherries, savoury spice and dried herbs.
Alpha Box & Dice were formed as a laboratory for viticultural exploration in 2008, as the team set up constructing a different wine style to represent every letter of the alphabet. Each member of the ‘Alphabet of Wine’ has its own unique personality that fulfils a different purpose – no two wines are created alike. AB&D wines are all linked by their environment and surrounding, being created holistically through minimal intervention, vegan friendly methods. However, they are completely distinct in their flavour, appearance and orientation. In this way, AB&D wines are just like a (mostly) happy family. With a culture soaked in community, quality and a laissez-faire spirit, Alpha Box & Dice will continue to inspire, delight and surprise in everything they do… and they do a lot!
"Championing the integrity and overwhelming quality of South Australian fruit"
Alpha Box & Dice's vision: Wines without boundaries – regional, varietal or stylistic. Wines whose entire raison d’être is to be delicious and to express the minutia and complexity of site and vintage conditions. Wines that enchant; wines that delight you and leave you betwixt the rock and ripe grape. Through a series of random experiments in the field and adventures in vinous bricolage, these are our modest goals.
Picked off two vineyards in Kuitpo, Adelaide Hills: Christmas Hill and Yacca Paddock. Light red clay soils build pretty, light aromatics and gentle tannin stucture. Grapes are de-stemmed and then undergo whole berry fermentation for three weeks. The wine is matured in 50% old oak plus 50% stainless steel for 18 months.

Medium-Bodied and Textured Red Wines
In the middle of the gamut from light to bold, medium-bodied reds are some of the best food pairing wines. Classic examples of this style include varieties like Sangiovese and Merlot. You’ll find there is quite a bit of variation in these varieties because of regional differences in growing and winemaking. For instance, a Merlot from a hillside estate on Spring Mountain in Napa Valley will have high tannin and blackberry flavours whereas a Merlot from a large valley vineyard in Lombardy, Italy will exhibit subtle tannins and soft cherry flavours.
