Krohn's 'entry level' is in a different category to most Ruby Ports - mature and versatile with deep red colour and fair concentration of warm, plummy fruit; aromatic and fruity, quite rich and full with soft finish. The fresh, lifted fruit has none of the stewed , baked characters that are typical of a basic Ruby.
Krohn are a small family-owned house run by brother and sister Jose and iolanda Carneiro. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range for a small house and each wine excels in its category.
The Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho, in the Rio Torto valley, is all A grade vineyard. Vinification takes place here, with some of the top wines still being trodden by foot. All the wines are matured in cellars at Villa Nova de Gaia.
