Details
La Grande Année is Bollinger’s Prestige Cuvée and is only produced when exceptional vintages occur.
The grapes come exclusively from Grand and Premier Crus. The 2002 vintage is a blend of 16 villages, 75% of which were Grand Cru and 25% from Premiers Cru. Bollinger use only the ‘cuvée’ juice in the making of La Grande Année. The first fermentation is always carried out 100% in old oak barrels, which is quite exceptional in Champagne.
The wine is aged on its lees for a minimum of 5 years, often more. After manual riddling and disgorging, the wine rests for a minimum of 3 months prior to shipment.
Rich gold, almost pink showing the maturity of the wine. Toasty, candied fruits, notes of exotic spices, rhubarb, stone fruit. Silky bubbles, full bodied, wonderful length and concentration.
The structure of La Grande Année compliments richer foods such as Foie Gras, Sweetbreads, Game and aromatic Cheeses.
‘The latest vintage of one of my favourite prestige cuvees hits the shelves this month. A Pinot Noir based blend, it bears all the Bollinger hallmarks of weight, elegance and style. A special occasion only wine, it’ll last for ages.’ Jonathan Ray, GQ February 2011
