The Love Grass Shiraz, d'Arenberg~The Love Grass Shiraz will linger with you in much the same way as the sticky flowers of the same name does…~A wild grass, the Love Grass, often grows in the vineyards surrounding the winery. During vintage, the sticky, Velcro-like, long stemmed flowers of the Love Grass affectionately attach themselves to the vineyard workers’ socks.
This Shiraz will linger with you in much the same way as the sticky flowers do and, as such, the family thought it fitting to name this wine ‘The Love Grass’.
The palate is juicy with weighty, red-fruited Shiraz dominated by plums, rhubarb, cherries, strawberries, mulberry, smoked bacon, white pepper and flower characters then a level of black currants and fragrant spice from the Cabernet and Petit Verdot appear.
On the second sip a lovely mulberry tar-like character of Merlot starts to fill the palate with vivid, deep-red cherry flavours mixed with a hint of sage leaf, cloves and turmeric from the Petit Verdot which fans out across the finish with a grippy but polished finish.
While the label does state ‘Shiraz’ small parcels of fruit of other varieties are also included (3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 3% Grenache, 2 % Petit Verdot 2% Tempranillo and 1% Pinot Noir)

Shiraz grapes were sourced from the northern half of the Margaret River region. The warm northerly exposure delivers a richness and full flavoured ripeness to the wine.
There's nothing too fancy required in making red wine when you start with good grapes.
A warm ferment that facilitates tannin, colour and flavour extraction by the pump-over technique is all that is needed. The wine is matured for ten months prior to assembling the blend in the lead up to the next vintage.

Rockbare Shiraz~The palate has great balance, integrated oak and an array of dark fruits. A complex, layered wine without undue aggression or rough edges…~Strong coffee aromas with an underlying spice and rich home made jams.
The palate has great balance, integrated oak and an array of dark fruits, predominantly blackberry and blackcurrant. A complex, layered wine without undue aggression or rough edges - the result of choosing old vine fruit, open fermentation, gentle pressing, and a little quite time in the barrel.
Winemaker Tim Burvill’s approach to Shiraz is find the oldest, gnarliest vines possible, crop them low, nurture them through the ferment and then allow them to mature in oak for a year or so. Grapes are sourced from a small group of vineyards, producing fruit of exceptional quality – with quality like this the wine pretty much makes itself.

d'Arry's Original Shiraz Grenache, d'Arenberg~ d’Arry’s original blend, first launched some four decades ago, was as is it appears today - a blend of Shiraz and Grenache grown on d’Arenberg’s low yielding, 19th century vineyards…~This wine was made in honour of d’Arenberg principal, Francis ‘d’Arry’ d’Arenberg Osborn. It is the culmination of more than half a century d’Arry’s winemaking career at his family winery in McLaren Vale. d’Arry’s original blend, first launched some four decades ago, was as is it appears today- a blend of Shiraz and Grenache grown on d’Arenberg’s low yielding, 19th century vineyards. The d’Arry’s Original has enjoyed huge success at shows through the years and has been fundamental in building the reputation of d’Arenberg.
When poured the wine displays a bright dark plum colour with a dark brick-red hue. The aroma immediately suggests a cooler year due to its level of intensity and spicy edges. The savoury mineral aromas and tighter-than-normal palate structure also indicates a cool year.
The fruit characters are distinctively d’Arenberg; very red with a savoury spiced plumy fruit character, mulberry, prunes mixed with dark, tarry chocolate notes. As the wine breathes, a punchy array of cranberry, Satsuma plum, fragrant red berry notes and hints of spiced Grenache appear, The wine further develops with liquorish and a potpourri, earthy meaty element with edges of mineral herbaceous notes. The palate is delightfully balanced with fine tannins, just the correct level of oak and zippy acidity. Very controlled, vibrant and poised.
The palate is young, tight and still quite suppressed. This vintage has all the hallmarks of a classic d’Arry’s Original and, given the right conditions, will cellar for a considerable time. To serve now this wine will respond to a vigorous decant before serving in a large glass.

The Footbolt Shiraz, d'Arenberg~The Footbolt Shiraz palate is consistently well structured with terrific fruit and totally integrated oak tannin providing great texture…~The young Footbolt Shiraz has a deep red-purple, then the immediate hallmarks of spicy, lifted ripe peppery mulberry and blackberry fruit aromas. Richer chocolate, stewed plum mint and spicy, cedary pepper smells and often cinnamon follow the initial attack of primary fruit characters.
d’Arenberg’s The Footbolt Shiraz palate is consistently well structured with terrific fruit and totally integrated oak tannin providing great texture to support plum, blackcurrant and rolling blackberry flavours especially on the mid-palate. Often dark chocolate characters are quite evident too. This is followed by a traditional, long, velvety, fine grained tannin finish.
The Footbolt Shiraz will gain complexity with age, as with all d’Arenberg red wines. The aromas slowly incorporate developed cedar, coffee and developed dark chocolate smells with leather, tobacco and earthy aromas while always maintaining great fruit characters from spicy through to very ripe, depending on the vintage.. More often than not distinctive peppery-spicy characters come to the fore after a little time in bottle.
On the tongue, the Footbolt Shiraz maintains a wonderfully textured palate with significant bottle age. Gentle, grainy black olive flavours balance the sweeter coffee, chocolate and occasional mint characters. The hallmarks of McLaren Vale, d'Arenberg, and The Footbolt Shiraz; a soft, rich middle palate, terrific texture and a long rolling finish, can reside with this wine for a number of years, even decades, as more than four decades of previous vintages have shown.

Yalumba Bushvine Grenache~A full flavoursome palate, showing an excellent depth of sweet fruit flavours and fruit cake-like complexity…~Winter rains promised a good start to the 04/05 growing season and were followed by a wonderfully mild spring. Yalumba is extremely fortunate to have amongst its growers a resource of very old, gnarled bush vines which produce low yields of concentrated Grenache. A range of terroir can be seen across the different vineyards, from sandy soils to sandy loam to red-brown earth over red clay.
Yalumba Barossa Bush Vine Grenache 2005 is deep red in colour with purple hues. The wine shows great Barossa regional character, opening with bright red cherries and mixed berry fruits and exhibiting sweet spicy characters with hints of savoury characters. The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon, Jim Barry~Purchasing the disused Penola Cricket Ground and planting vines there in the late 90s provided Jim Barry with a whole new ball game, if you’ll excuse the pun…~The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend from the Barry family’s recently established Coonawarra vineyard and its long-held vineyards in Clare.
“Being able to purchase the disused Penola Cricket Ground and plant vines there in the late 90s has provided our winemaking team with a whole new ball game, if you’ll excuse the pun,” said Peter Barry, son of the late Jim.
“By combining the leaner, tighter, more herbaceous aspects of Coonawarra cabernet with the richer, softer flavours from Clare they have been able to create a full-bodied red with distinctive varietal characters and immediate drinkability."

The first amigo calls Rocky Road its home, the other two hail from a similar bit of dirt down Sebbes Road, at McLeod Creek. Both vineyards lie in the southern half of the Margaret River wine region. Shiraz enjoys a great site; tough soils but a balmy northern exposure.
The grenache and mataro have their roots in gnarly, sandy gravels on the top of a hill that cops a full-on ‘Southerly Buster’. Lesser varieties would falter but these two robust and sturdy amigos struggle and thrive.

The High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon, d'Arenberg~Parcels of wine that make up the Coppermine Road come from a nearly extinct low-yielding clone which is characterized by its perfume, concentration and great acidity…~Upon release, d’Arenberg’s The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep vibrant young deep red - purple colour.
The nose shows intense blackcurrant fruit, slight cedary cinnamon spice barrel ferment & oak derived aromas, violet and mint scents as well as liquorice & chocolate smells. Primary Mulberry aromas are also evident on the palate. Combined with some blueberry, cassis and sweet rhubarb flavours dominating the typically rich & intense sweet, cedary middle palate flavours.
These are followed by a typically firm but fine- grained vibrant tannins, extended texture overlaying soft plum which deceptively disguise the rich powerful cassis and blackcurrant flavours.
The emphasis is on powerful full- bodied varietal fruit flavour with totally integrated barrel fermented and oak matured characters falling into the subtle cedary, smoky and cashew spectrum.
After time in bottle The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon should gain more chocolate, truffle, cigar box and earth aromas and flavours. Nevertheless it should maintain its freshness, persistent flavour, linear acidity and varietal tannin hold. Mushroom, black olive, stewed rhubarb and cooked beetroot may also play a part.
Varietal eucalyptus and bell pepper hints may also come to the fore but be well integrated with the other developing characters, maintaining an even palate weight with a seamless & persistently rolling length.

The Custodian Grenache, d'Arenberg~Rich plum and sweet blackberry fruit flavours are lifted by gentle vanillin and coffee-mocha oak derived flavours and crunchy fine-grained fruit and oak tannins…~As a young wine, the Custodian shows a dark ruby purple hued colour and distinctive rich ripe lifted plum, cherry and deep blackcurrant aromas on top of lighter lolly- like violet, musk and raspberry smells, the essences of Grenache.
Touches of white pepper, tobacco, cinnamon and spice follow onto the medium to full-bodied juicy palate. The rich plum and sweet blackberry fruit flavours are lifted by gentle vanillin and coffee-mocha oak derived flavours and crunchy fine- grained fruit and oak tannins.
After some bottle ageing the colour becomes red-brown and the young fruit scented aromas and flavours gradually transform into velvety rich, spicy, strawberry jam, creamy chocolate, earthy and smoky edged aromas.
This integration and complexity develops on the palate too, where the young tannin slowly falls away to reveal a seamless, soft sweet rolling middle palate mulberry and prune like fruit with tertiary biscuit, coffee and chewy old leather flavours before a long, soft, dry mouth filling fine acid finish.

This Shiraz Viognier was traditionally made in open fermenters, finishing fermentation in a mixture of old and new French and American oak. Both Shiraz and Viognier were picked at the same time with the Shiraz at approximately 14.5 degrees Baumé and the Viognier at about 14 degrees Baumé. Shiraz and Viognier were then co-fermented, leaving the final blend at about 90% Shiraz and 10% Viognier.

The Cadenzia GSM, d'Arenberg~The Cadenzia by d’Arenberg is an exotic full bodied wine dominated by red berries, dark spice, roasted black tea and mulberry fruits…~The inspiration behind this name came from the word ‘Cadenza’ which is an impassioned improvisation played by a virtuoso soloist toward the end of a musical performance. Cadenzia is made in celebration of the winemakers’ opportunity, after vintage, to blend an exceptional McLaren Vale wine based on the Grenache variety.
This wine is dominated by an amazing fragrance of dark rich aromas such as blueberries, plums and cardamoms with a back ground of kirsch and dark-spiced fruit notes. As the wine opens, a developing mix of red berries, prune notes, spice and anise evolve giving the wine a depth which isn’t initially apparent.
The palate is full bodied and silky smooth. Flavours are dominated by cranberries, mulberries and blueberries and then levels of dried fruit and herbs intertwine. As the wine opens up, a mix of raspberry, mulberry, dark spiced fruits and licorice appear with a backdrop of iodine and lavender. The palate is beautifully layered with flavours and shows excellent complexity with fine integrated tannins and a slightly elevated level of acidity. Clearly the Grenache and Shiraz are working as soul-mates while the Mourvèdre gives the wine a tannic, dried herb edge that adds another dimension to the juicy finish defined by these classic varieties.
The Cadenzia range of wines are all sealed utilizing the innovative South Australian designed ‘Zork’ seal in place of the traditional cork stopper. Initial industry trials have proven Zork sealing qualities eliminating the effects of wine spoilage from oxidation and cork taint.

The Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier, d'Arenberg~The Love Grass Shiraz will linger with you in much the same way as the sticky flowers of the same name does…~The vineyards and bushland that surround the d’Arenberg winery are home to the unique nativeAustralian bird, the Kookaburra, famous for its distinctive laughing call. Much to the amusement of thefamily, Chester Osborn’s daughters, Alicia and Ruby, named their two wild pet Kookaburras the“Laughing Magpies”.
The Magpie plumage is black with a stripe of white feathers and bears no resemblance to its famouscousin, but to this day the name has stuck. The Osborn’s thought the name was a good choice for McLarenVale’s first ever Shiraz Viognier blend combining the (black) Shiraz and its white partner, Viognier and forit being such a cheerful wine (with colour & life) it resembles this cheeky native bird.
Very dark saturated appearance and a violet-crimson hue suggesting a complex dry red.The aroma is very intense with mix of dark Maraschino cherries, spiced fruit skins andobvious notes of apricot stones, crushed ginger and mandarin peel. As the wine opens upfurther notes of black roasted teas, black olive and smoky tarry notes evolve with a fragrantlift of violets and lilies. The palate is full flavoured with ripe, juicy, soft, mouth-filling, fruitflavours with notes of cranberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, cherries and darkchocolate/carob. The herbaceous edges keep the palate in check.
Overall balance is excellent with the oak suppressed by dark fruit while the floral tea-liketannins are abundant and silky acidity gives the wine great definition. The finish is long, juicyand pointed with blackcurrant and jube flavours and a mineral note pushing through. The concentration and life of this wine suggests it will greatly benefit with further bottle agingfor 10 years or more.

The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon, d'Arenberg~Parcels of wine that make up the Coppermine Road come from a nearly extinct low-yielding clone which is characterized by its perfume, concentration and great acidity…~Upon release, d’Arenberg’s The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep vibrant young deep red - purple colour.

Yalumba The Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon~The palate opens with the sweet berry richness of red currants and dark chocolates, merging into a full bodied wine with a nice fleshy extract…~The season leading up to the 2002 vintage was cool and wet with above average rainfall across the south east of South Australia. The wet conditions during flowering reduced fruit set considerably with fewer berries per bunch than normal across all varieties, particularly red grapes. The upside of these lower yields were enhanced colour and fruit concentration.
Menzies is made by small lot vinification, maintaining the integrity of each harvest parcel throughout vinification and maturation. The grapes are crushed to small static fermenters and the liberation of colour and tannin is controlled either by plunging the skins, irrigating the fermenting wine over the cap or draining all the wine from the skins then flooding it back. Selected parcels were given extended skin contact before pressing.
The majority of the oak the wine is matured in is French but this year saw the inclusion of a small number of well seasoned new American oak barriques. Once the bottling blend was finalised, the wine was given a further four months in oak to harmonise.
Yalumba The Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 is deep crimson red. The aroma is a meld of briar, red currant and black olive flavours through to black cherry and plum skins. The palate opens with the sweet berry richness of red currants and dark chocolates, merging into a full bodied wine with a nice fleshy extract. Good density and lashings of soft tannins building towards the finish.

They also have acknowledged the skills and dedicated service of people who have enhanced the traditions and culture of Yalumba.
The Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz blend is a distinctively Australian style, and The Signature has set the benchmark for this iconic style, drawing heavily on Yalumba's great Barossa resource of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vineyards. Deep and intense - a wine made for longevity, very much "The Signature" style.
The 2002 vintage was indeed exemplary. The weather remained mild and dry over the long ripening period, in fact the month of January experienced the lowest day temperatures on record. The end result was wines with great colour, varietal flavours and intensity.
Yalumba The Signature Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2002 is a dense, plum red colour, that abounds with dark brooding aromas of black fruits, plum and currants, with suggestions of licorice and spice tightly interwoven with creamy oak. Long smooth and silky flavours fill the plump concentrated palate. Powerful but restrained, the wine finishes with a mouthful of fine layeredtannins.

Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon~Taking on the mantle of maturity, a bouquet of violets and brambley fruit complexed with brandy snaps, vanilla and tobacco…~Taking on the mantle of maturity, a bouquet of violets and brambley fruit complexed with brandy snaps, vanilla and tobacco. The wine evolves over time to an array of aromas that let your imagination run wild. Dense and luscious palate, which is offering immediate appeal now but will continue to develop beautifully for years to come.
The oak for the barrels originates exclusively from the forests of Nevers, Allier and Troncais and coopered in France. The wine underwent periodic barrel to barrel rackings and regular toppings with a final assemblage done in spring of '00. The early blending allows time for a harmonious marriage of the components to occur. After 18 months in barrel the wine was blended together and coarsely filtered into bottle, mid December 2001.

Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz~Yalumba The Octavius has established a reputation as one of Australia's icon Shiraz wines, an amazing feat considering the firstrelease was the 1990 vintage…~Yalumba The Octavius has established a reputation as one of Australia's icon Shiraz wines, an amazing feat considering the firstrelease was the 1990 vintage. In addition to being sourced from a number of very old vineyards in the Barossa, The Octavius is matured in American oak 'octaves' of 90 litres capacity. It is the only red wine in the world that is matured in such small barrels. The secret of the wine not becoming overpowered by the oak is that the wood is seasoned at Yalumba for eight years before theoctaves are crafted. Yalumba is one of a select few wineries in the world who boast their own coopers practising the ancient craft of barrel making.
A combination of weather conditions affected the 1999/2000 growing season and led to a slightly earlier than normal harvest. Very low cropping levels accompanied the harvest and resulted in a vintage which has produced dense, rich and concentrated wines.
Shiraz grapes for Yalumba The Octavius are sourced from both Eden Valley and the Barossa Valley and are taken from very old, dry grown vines. These vines produce very low crops of intensely flavoured small berries, producing richly concentrated wines.
